Founded in 1916, E.T. Gresham’s current office building, constructed in 1939, has witnessed various changes over the years to adapt to evolving needs. At one point, large windows on the street level were blocked off for security and privacy, and the main entrance was relocated to face the parking lot. Recently, the owner sought to restore the building to its original look, and our firm was tasked with solving this challenge while maintaining modern functionality.
The solution began by reopening the original window openings and installing new windows designed to mimic the building's original aesthetic. This restoration not only brought the building back to its former glory but also flooded the office with natural light, significantly improving the work environment. Employees have embraced this change, enjoying the newfound brightness that enhances both productivity and well-being.
To complement the restored façade, we completely reimagined the office lobby. The updated design incorporates contemporary elements while reflecting the firm’s deep history and brand identity. One of E.T. Gresham’s specialties is steel structure fabrication, which we highlighted by incorporating weathering steel panels in the lobby. These panels feature cut-out, backlit letters, proudly displaying the firm’s name, location in Norfolk, VA, and the founding year of 1917. This signage serves not only as a bold statement of the company’s branding but also as a conversation starter that tells the story of E.T. Gresham’s legacy and expertise.
