Hanaki is a sushi restaurant located in Chesapeake VA.  After 10 years and a growing popular reputation, the owner decided to update the look of the space into a more contemporary design.  The challenge is to keep the existing overall layout to minimize the construction time and cost, while creating a systematic design language to replace the current elements and integrate the space. It is like doing a delicate surgery.

The design concept uses the tatami ratio (1:2) to create a matrix grid as the base of the space zoning. The sushi bar is the center of the space, radiating out to the second layer of bar seating and the third layer of table seating. A series of vertical surfaces are created to anchor the spaces, while creating control lines on the elevations to unit all elements and create visual orders.A contemporary image enriches the space by creatively combining materials representing both nature and sushi culture.

The first phase of the completed design focused on the vestibule. The previous entrance was surrounded by drywall and felt very enclosed. The new entrance  replaces the drywall with transparent partitions. The mullions of the glass wall coordinate with the existing storefront mullions to keep consistent visual control lines.  As a result, the transparency of the new vestibule is very welcoming and also makes the dining space feel more open. With phase one being completed within a week, people dining can now also enjoy the addition of the beautiful new chandelier as they enter the restaurant.

Hanaki Owner Testimonial

"GARC’s design reflects the type of food we are serving and the culture behind, and transforms our outdated interior to a contemporary image. Their design works with the existing layout but creates a whole new experience. Since we are a running restaurant, one important thing to us is that we want to close the restaurant for construction as short as possible. GARC managed to make the design to be completed in phases and many components can be fabricated off-site and assembled on site to save time. We finished construction of phase I in about a week. "
