This renovation project in Virginia Beach is another great example of opening up the spaces to make a small house feel larger. The original layout of the first floor had a living room, a family room, a dining area and a kitchen, all of which were in separate and small spaces. Some of the spaces also had a lower ceiling than other areas because of the ductwork running above. The front entry was also considered tight and lacked  a sense of arrival upon walking through the door.

Our design opens up the entire floor plan. We incorporated the design areas with lower ceilings to also help define and enrich the spaces. The stairway is opened up on both sides with wrought iron railings and screens to help announce the entry. From the more substantial entryway,  you can see through to the large kitchen island beyond.  All the kitchen cabinets use IKEA products.
